Summary

You are not your mind but the awareness that observes thought and emotion. Psychological suffering grows through identification with the voice in your head, the pain body and stories built from past and future. Freedom comes through presence: observe without judgment, return attention to the body and senses, and act only on what can be done now. Surrender means accepting the present unconditionally – not passivity, but dropping inner resistance before you remove yourself, change the situation, or accept it totally.

“All true artists - whether or not they realize it - create from a place of no mind. From inner stillness.”

“To be free of time is to be free of the psychological need of past for your identity and future for your fulfillment.”

Chappy’s Review

An interesting peek into Eastern philosophy, but just not really my style with the mystical pain body and stuff like that. I prefer facts and data over feelings and vibes.

Key Takeaways

  • Observe without judging or condemning
  • Being intensely aware but not thinking is the essence of meditation
  • Anxiety comes from spending too much time in the future

  • Observe the peculiar pleasure derived from identification
  • All fear is fear of the death of identity
  • Anticipation and waiting mean you do not want the present
  • Your sense of self need not depend on the outcome of goal striving
  • Enjoy the now and the doing rather than treating them as means to a future end
  • Satori = the state of no mind
  • Inner stillness is the source of creative work
  • Stay connected with the inner body rather than a needy social identity
  • Meditation uses the inner body as a portal into the unmanifested
  • Communion = true communication = love
  • Complete acceptance dissolves the basis of argument
  • Let negativity pass through you
  • What you perceive reflects your perspective
  • Die to the past every moment
  • Acceptance does not prevent effective action; it removes the psychological fight with what already is

Notes

Introduction

  • “I cannot live with myself” implies two selves
  • “I am”: consciousness as pure state prior to identification with form

1: You Are Not Your Mind

  • Need to find your true nature beyond form
  • Buddha’s “enlightenment is the avoidance of suffering” negative definition so mind cannot misbelieve it
  • “I think therefore I am” is the problem, not solution
  • The delusion: you believe that you are your mind
  • The voices you hear in your head are involuntary thought processes
  • You can free yourself from the voice in your head - start by observing
    • Do not judge or condemn
  • Being intensely aware but not thinking is the essence of meditation
  • 80-90% of thinking is wasted or even negative - compulsive thinking is a disease / false pleasure
  • “All true artists - whether or not they realize it - create from a place of no mind. From inner stillness.”
    • Eg. scientists too
  • You are not the emotion, you are the observer

2: Consciousness: The Way Out of Pain

  • Live more in the now
  • Observe how your mind labels the now
  • The pain body: manifest pain seeks to persist via identifying with more pain in life
    • Break the cycle by dis identifying with it, observing
  • Observe the peculiar pleasure you derive from identifying with it
  • Find people who have that fire and spend time around them
  • All fear is fear of death of identity

3: Moving Deeply into the Now

  • The only time you can live is in the present
  • People like things that force them into the now, free from the burden of personality
  • The past and future are projections of the present (current state)
  • Better/worse imagined futures are all illusory
  • Don’t dwell - what can you do now?
  • Anxiety = spending too much time thinking about the future
  • Thinking in terms of problems and ego is insanity
  • Realize you’re already full / complete at a deeper level, even as you goal strive
    • Sense of self doesn’t depend on the outcome

4: Mind Strategies for Avoiding the Now

  • “To be free of time is to be free of the psychological need of past for your identity and future for your fulfillment.”
  • Background noise
  • Resentment is avoiding what already is - serves no purpose
  • You must:
    1. Remove yourself entirely
    2. Change it
    3. Accept it totally
  • You must enjoy the now / the doing
  • Anticipation / waiting means you don’t want the present
  • “The power of now”: “the power of your presence - your consciousness liberated from thought forms”

5: The State of Presence

  • Satori = the state of no mind
  • Everything is a form of consciousness
  • “Consciousness is god essence expressing itself in one form” (ie. gaia)
  • Christ = presence = your god essence = the self
  • “I am that I am” - no time, just presence

6: The Inner Body

  • Insistence that humanity is collectively insane
  • Your identity becomes a needy social construct
  • The key is to be in a permanent state of connectedness with your inner body
  • Focus within to be still and present when faced with a situation

7: Portals into the Unmanifested

  • Meditation*: merge with your inner body energy field
  • Nothing in the physical form matters that much
  • “Space and time are illusory but contain a core of truth: they are the two essential attributes of god - infinity and eternity - perceived as if they had an external existence outside you”
  • “Death is painful only so long as you cling to that illusion”

8: Enlightened Relationships

  • All relationships are flawed until you’re deeply present
  • Ego is vulnerable + insecure
  • Communion = true communication = love
  • Pain bodies*
  • Identification prevents you + communities from overcoming the pain body. Don’t identify with it
  • Live in complete acceptance
  • “You cannot have an argument with a fully conscious person”

9: Beyond Happiness and Unhappiness There Is Peace

  • Impermanence is a central fact
  • Whenever you feel negativity, remember it as a sign to “attention here and now. Wake up”
  • Let negativity pass right through you
  • What you perceive is a reflection of you (perspective)
  • What is being born is a new shared enlightened consciousness
  • Passive resistance, and don’t carry negativity

10: The Meaning of Surrender

  • Surrender: accepting the present moment unconditionally
  • Inner non-resistance
  • “Die to the past every moment”
